Inside the pyramids, honestly explained

Yes, tourists can go inside the pyramids, but not with a standard ticket. The plateau ticket covers the outside of the three pyramids, the Sphinx and the Panorama viewpoint; every interior needs its own extra ticket, and the Great Pyramid's is the most expensive single ticket on the plateau. Inside Khufu you bend over in a low, steep passage, walk up the tall Grand Gallery and reach a bare red granite chamber with an empty, lidless sarcophagus. It is warm and narrow, and there are no paintings or hieroglyphs inside any Giza pyramid. At the time of writing, the Great Pyramid and Khafre are open inside, and Menkaure is closed. Almost no tour includes an interior ticket, so check before you book.

Going inside a pyramid is one of those plans that sounds obvious until you arrive. Most visitors expect painted walls and treasure, then find a hot, narrow passage and an empty room. Others come out saying it was the most memorable hour of their trip. Both are honest reactions, and knowing what is inside before you pay helps you decide which one you will have.

This guide explains what each interior is really like, which pyramids are open in 2026, how the tickets work and who is better off staying outside. For the day around it, see visiting the pyramids without a tour and the best time to visit.

The quick answer

Can you go inside? Yes, with a separate ticket for each pyramid. Open in autumn 2026: the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Khafre; Menkaure closed in September 2026 with no reopening date. Best experience: the Great Pyramid, for the Grand Gallery. Quieter and simpler: Khafre, or the Red Pyramid at Dahshur, south of Saqqara. What it is like: a low, steep passage, warm air, no decoration and an empty granite sarcophagus. Skip it if you dislike tight spaces or heat, or have bad knees or a bad back. Tickets for the Great Pyramid are limited each day and can sell out in busy months, so book early. Only one tour on this site includes the Great Pyramid ticket: the Pyramids Tour with Great Pyramid Entry.

Can tourists go into the pyramids?

Yes. In autumn 2026 you can go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Khafre, each with its own ticket. The Pyramid of Menkaure closed in September 2026 as part of a routine rotation for maintenance, with no reopening date announced.

The authorities rotate the interiors so that each one can rest and be maintained, which means the list of open pyramids changes from year to year. In September 2026 the Supreme Council of Antiquities reopened Khafre and closed Menkaure. Treat this as correct at the time of writing and check on the day: a guide or the ticket office will tell you what is open.

Outside the three big pyramids, some of the small queens' pyramids beside the Great Pyramid can sometimes be entered, and the Tomb of Meresankh III on the plateau, with its own ticket, is the place to go if you want to see decorated walls. Further south, the Red and Bent pyramids at Dahshur and the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara can also be entered.

What is it really like inside the Great Pyramid?

You bend over in a low, steep passage, then walk up the tall Grand Gallery to a plain red granite room holding an empty, lidless stone sarcophagus. It is warm, narrow and undecorated: an experience rather than a sight.

  • The passage: the first stretch goes upwards and is too low to stand in, so you walk bent over on a wooden walkway with handrails, often with people coming the other way.
  • The Grand Gallery: suddenly the ceiling rises. The gallery is about 47 m long and 8.5 m high, its walls stepping inwards towards the top, and you go up it on a steep ramp.
  • The King's Chamber: a bare room of red granite blocks with an empty granite sarcophagus without a lid. There are no paintings, carvings or hieroglyphs.
  • The air: warm and still, more humid when the pyramid is busy. Expect to sweat, even in winter.
  • The time: allow about an hour for the visit, including any wait at the entrance.
  • Photos: photography inside is usually not allowed, so plan to remember it rather than film it.

The pyramid has three chambers in all, the unfinished Subterranean Chamber, the Queen's Chamber and the King's Chamber; the walk visitors make leads up to the King's Chamber.

One of the few tours that includes the Great Pyramid ticket: a private car, a guide on site and the walk up to the King's Chamber, in four hours.

Which pyramid is best to go inside?

For the experience, the Great Pyramid, because of the Grand Gallery. For fewer people and a simpler visit, Khafre at Giza or the Red Pyramid at Dahshur. All of them are bare inside.

Think of the choice as a trade between drama, comfort and crowds. The table sets out what each open interior is like and who it suits.

Is it worth going inside the Great Pyramid?

If you want to stand in the heart of the oldest Wonder of the Ancient World, yes. If you hope to see decoration or treasure, no: the King's Chamber is an empty granite room, and the view from outside is the bigger highlight.

Most people who love it talk about the feeling: the weight of stone above you, the Grand Gallery opening up after the crouch, and the quiet of the chamber when it is not crowded. A reviewer of the Pyramids Tour with Great Pyramid Entry wrote that going inside "will be remembered forever". People who regret it usually expected something to look at, or found the heat and the queue harder than they thought.

Price matters too, even without figures: the Great Pyramid interior is the most expensive single ticket on the plateau. If your budget only stretches to one extra, Khafre gives you the experience of being inside a Giza pyramid for much less, and the Tomb of Meresankh III gives you colour and carvings that no pyramid has.

Khafre or Khufu: which interior should you choose?

Choose Khufu for the Grand Gallery and the sense of occasion; choose Khafre for a shorter, quieter visit at a much lower ticket price. Both end in a plain chamber with no decoration.

Khafre's pyramid often looks taller from the ground because it stands on bedrock about 10 m higher and is a little steeper, but Khufu's is the larger one: about 146 m when finished and about 138 m today. Khafre is also the only one of the three that keeps some of its smooth original casing stones near the top, which you see best from outside.

Inside, Khufu is the more dramatic visit and the more crowded one. Khafre reopened in September 2026 after its turn in the maintenance rotation, so it is a good moment to see it. If you can afford only one, ask yourself whether you want the Grand Gallery or simply the experience of being inside a pyramid: the answer usually decides it.

Khafre still wears part of its smooth casing near the top, the best clue to how all three once looked.

Are there quieter pyramids to go inside?

Yes. The Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur, south of Saqqara, are far quieter, and their interiors are part of the single Dahshur site ticket. The Step Pyramid at Saqqara has a separate interior ticket when its galleries are open.

The Red Pyramid was Egypt's first successful smooth-sided pyramid, built for Sneferu, Khufu's father. Its entrance passage is about 0.91 m high and 1.2 m wide and runs down at 27 degrees for about 61 m, so you spend a long time crouching on the way in and out. At the bottom, tall chambers with stepped roofs feel surprisingly spacious, and you often share them with only a handful of people. The Bent Pyramid, whose angle changes halfway up, has been open inside since 2019, subject to closures. Dahshur is open from 8 am to 5 pm.

The Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur Tour (4.8 from 768 reviews) lets you choose one site or combine them, from 3 to 8 hours, which makes Dahshur easy to reach without your own car. The wider picture is in pyramids beyond Giza.

Who should skip going inside?

Anyone who struggles in tight or hot spaces, or who has bad knees or a bad back, is better off staying outside. You see more of what makes Giza special from the plateau than from the chambers.

  • Claustrophobia: the passages are narrow and low, and when it is busy you cannot turn back easily.
  • Heat: the air is warm and humid and does not move; in summer it can be tiring.
  • Knees and back: you walk bent over on a steep slope, up and then down again.
  • Tight schedules: with a half-day tour, an hour inside means less time at the Panorama and the Sphinx.

Staying out loses you nothing in sights. Walk around the base of the Great Pyramid, take the shuttle to the Panorama viewpoint for the classic row of pyramids, and spend longer at the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, all covered by your plateau ticket.

How do you get a ticket to go inside a pyramid?

Buy the interior ticket together with your plateau ticket, on the Ministry's official ticket website or by card at the ticket office. Great Pyramid tickets are limited each day and can sell out in busy months, so book early.

Each interior is a separate ticket, and the ticket office takes bank cards rather than cash. Booking online gives you a QR code on your phone and the best chance of a Great Pyramid slot in the busy season. Arrive early: tickets go first thing, and the morning is cooler inside too. Students with a valid card get a reduced rate. Hours and current rules are on the Ministry's Giza page.

On a tour, read what is included. The Pyramids Tour with Great Pyramid Entry includes the Khufu ticket; one reviewer said the shop stops at the end could have been skipped, so ask about shop visits before booking. On the Pyramids, Sphinx and Grand Egyptian Museum tour the Great Pyramid is an option, and the Private Pyramids Tour with Camel Ride and the Half-Day Pyramids and Sphinx Tour include the plateau but not any interior, so your guide can help you buy one on the day if tickets remain.

Private Pyramids Tour with Camel Ride
